Barn aisles and wash racks that are kinder to legs than concrete

A horse standing on concrete all day is standing on the hardest thing on the property, and a wet concrete wash rack is the slickest. Rubber Stone is a poured rubber surface that goes over the barn aisle, wash rack, grooming bay, and stall front you already have. It is textured so shod hooves and rubber boots grip when it is wet, it gives underfoot, and it drains instead of puddling. One continuous surface, no mats to shift, lift, or hide manure under.

Why barns are switching from mats

  • Non-slip when wet: a textured finish that holds a shod hoof and a wet boot in the wash rack and the aisle
  • Soft: rubber granules give under a hoof. Easier on legs, joints, and hooves than concrete, and quieter
  • Permeable: water drains through to the slab and out, so the wash rack and aisle do not hold puddles
  • Seamless: nothing to lift, shift, or trap urine and manure underneath. A hose or pressure washer cleans it
  • Over existing concrete: cracked, pitted, or rough slabs are fine. No demolition, no new pour, and the barn stays in use
  • Cooler: in a North State summer, rubber does not bank heat the way concrete and asphalt do

Where it goes in a barn

Barn aisles, wash racks and grooming bays, stall fronts and stall floors over concrete, cross-tie areas, tack and feed rooms, trailer tie-up pads, and the walkway to the arena. Rubber Stone wraps step edges and drain slopes, so a wash rack keeps its pitch to the drain and loses its slickness.

It is the same product that goes on pool decks and under playgrounds, poured and hand troweled on site, in a color you pick from the chart.

How a barn install goes

  • Walk-through and samples. We look at the aisle, the racks, and the drainage, and bring the color chart
  • Phased so horses stay in the barn: one aisle or rack at a time, each walkable within a day or two
  • Prep: pressure wash, fill cracks and spalls, grind where needed, prime
  • Pour: mixed on site and hand troweled, pitched to your drains
  • Cure and handoff: a short cure before horses walk on it, and a care sheet for the barn manager

Questions we get

No. Rubber Stone is bound in polyurethane and is used on driveways that see cars every day. Shoes grip it rather than skate on it, which is the point.

It is seamless, so there is nowhere for waste to collect underneath the way it does under mats. Hose or pressure wash it. Liquid drains through to the slab, so the surface does not stay wet.

Yes, over a concrete stall floor. Most barns do aisles and wash racks first because that is where the slipping happens, then stalls.

Not for the whole job. We pour one area at a time, and each is ready to walk on within a day or two. Horses stay in their stalls or turn out while their aisle is done.
